Directed By: Marc Webb

Directing – 10

The direction for this film was incredible. Webb makes the film work in almost every way. I would say if I had to give a slight negative, it would maybe be the pacing. However, the film as a whole works incredibly well. I also appreciated how we actually can feel the relationship, as if we are a part of it. When we feel happiness and joy we as the audience feel that and when we feel sadness and heartbreak we feel that as well.

Cinematography – 10

The cinematography is pretty good.

Score – 10

The score is pretty good as well.

Story – 10

The story follows Tom as he gets dumped by Summer a girl who is not entirely his girlfriend, but they are kind of a thing. We later get to see 500 days of their relationship pan out. I have to say to the writers of this film, “WHO HURT YOU GUYS?” This movie is incredibly relatable, This movie is filled with comedy, joy, heartbreak, etc. You can clearly feel those feelings throughout the film. Also, if one goes into this film expecting a love story, well it’s not. It’s also a film about Life, Purpose, Heartbreak, What is the meaning of true love? Etc. Overall, I was invested in the story. I can pretty much understand what it is like to go through heartbreak, I feel that may be another reason why this film truly made me love and appreciate the film as a whole. Also, the story isn’t depressing the whole way through, it shows the good and bad of relationships. As I said, there are moments to smile and feel joyful, but that’s also what makes the heartbreak scenes sting a little more. Overall, the story is great.

Acting – 10

The acting is amazing. Joseph Gordon Levitt does an incredible job playing Tom. Zooey Deschanel does a nice job at playing Summer. Everyone else does a great job as well, but Zooey and JGL are the standouts.

Post-Production – 10

The post-production did a fantastic job. The editing, the effects, etc. Post-production was phenomenal.

Entertainment – 10

There are a few moments that drag a little. If I were to watch this a few more times, the pacing would be perfect. Regardless, I think this movie is nearly flawless. If one hasn’t experienced Heartbreak this film may not resonate with you. That being said, this film, to me, was amazing!

Final Rating

10/10 – Amazing, yet heartbreaking film.
