Directed By: John Krasinski

Directing – 8

John Krasinski does a great job at directing this film, the vibe of the film makes it feel like they are in this dystopian world where monsters are now roaming around and they have to stay as quiet as possible in order to survive. The feeling of even just an accidental sound could even destroy their entire family is engaging. I also like how the family only speaks in certain scenarios, also when they do speak it’s not like they are speaking at the top of their lungs like they are still fairly quiet. Krasinski builds suspense pretty well and actually makes us wonder what will this family do next in order to survive. I will say in terms of negatives with his direction, there are few moments that could have been explored differently such as a particular reveal early on and there are some nitpicks, and if I was John Krasinski, I would have maybe thought twice about certain things. There is also a scene in the middle of the film that felt like we didn’t necessarily need it.

Cinematography – 10

The cinematography is pretty good. The lighting and the framing are really well done, they give the right vibe and feel for the film.

Score – 10

The score is done pretty well it gives off the right vibe for the film, I don’t think there were many problems I had with it.

Story – 7

The story is pretty solid. It follows a family who lives in this apocalyptic future where aliens, that have sonar-like hearing, exist. Now everyone who is currently, and wants to stay alive, must do so by making little to no sound. The film’s messages are about family, survival, and protecting those that we care for, etc. I will say it’s a solid story. However, it does contain some nitpicks, a good variety of things happen and it can contradict other things. Also, there’s a scene halfway into the film that felt a little unnecessary. To me, at least, it was more catering to the audience to experience more horror. Even though it didn’t do much for the overall story because it ended fairly quickly. Also, there’s a good variety of poor character choices not the level of other horror films, but a pretty solid amount.

Acting – 10

The actors in the film barely speak and that could very much be a turn-off for many audiences. However, it works pretty well, there is a little dialogue, so a lot of the acting mainly comes down to more subtle mannerisms and facial expressions. Overall, they did a good job with their performances.

Post-Production – 8

Post-Production was done fairly well. The special effects don’t always look top-tier. Also, the scene halfway into the film could have been cut, or there could have been more to that scene to make it more riveting.

Entertainment – 8

From an entertainment standpoint, the film was pretty good. There are good variety of flaws that are noticeable; however, it feels like a good horror movie to watch with friends or for a party. The film itself is a good horror film.

Final Rating

8.6/10 – Good Horror Film
