Directed By: Nicholas Meyer

Directing – 8

Meyer’s direction for this film is nice. I very much like how he structures the film. He takes his time with the story, with hopes the audience will stay invested until the end. I will say, there is a time where a couple of characters are on a planet and it doesn’t feel as interesting as the mystery that was going on. I felt we could have focused more on the mystery storyline a bit more.

Cinematography – 8

The cinematography is nice. I will say; however, there are some moments where it could have been better.

Score – 10

The score is pretty good, I think the score works well for the film overall.

Story – 7

The story follows Captain Kirk as he has to escort a Klingon Vessel through Space. One night “the ship” mysteriously fires on the Klingon vessel. Kirk and McCoy are arrested for possible assassination. Now they must find a way to escape, while the Enterprise crew uncovers the mystery of who was truly behind the assassinations. The storyline is about solving the mystery; however, it is a film about prejudice and racism. Both the Federation and The Klingon Empire don’t fondly like one another. So throughout the film, we get to see both sides and how they view each other. I think these topics are still relevant today, it is a solid film with a nice message. I will say as for negatives there is a place where we are on a planet with a couple of characters and I understand why it is in the film, but I feel it could have been a shortened storyline. There’s also a character that is introduced, and I feel they have a purpose, but it’s also kind of wasted. Finally, when we find out the purpose of those behind the assassination, while I do understand it, it is a bit lazy to me. Regardless, the story itself was nice.

Acting – 8

The acting is done well. Everyone plays their characters well, I will say there are a few moments that are odd, but for the most part it is good.

Post-Production – 8

The mixing for some scenes is not always top-tier. The ship noises at times are extremely loud and some of the quieter scenes with dialogue are not always the greatest. However, the editing is done nicely and the effects look incredible.

Entertainment – 8

I will say when the reveal of WHY the assassination occurred feels kind of like cheap and redundant. Also, the storyline with two characters on a planet I felt could have been shortened. Regardless, I do think this was a nice Star Trek film.

Final Rating

8.2/10 – Nice Star Trek Film.
