Season 1
Various Directors
Directing – 9
The direction for the first season was pretty good. The first four episodes had me incredibly griped and engaged, I felt incredibly invested and wanted to see where this show was going to go and what they had to reveal later on. I will say my only real negative is that we sometimes focus we sometimes focus on a character and they later on don’t have much to do with the overall story, at least I don’t know what they do with him later on, but so far this character felt sidelined and we definitely get character development with this character, but his focus isn’t a focus of the overall story. I don’t know, He just seems there to kind of se how his life is, I suppose.
Cinematography – 10
The cinematography is really good. I Like how it has a darker color to it, showing that this isn’t your typical superhero content.
Score – 10
The score is pretty good as well for the show.
Story – 9
The story follows a group that gets together called, “The Boys”. They are a group that is trying their best to take down this group called the Seven. Which is a group of superhero’s that are not exactly your friendly group of heroes. They are kind of in front of the camera look like heroes that you look up to, but behind closed doors they are scumbags. Throughout the show we get to see who everyone truly is, also the group the Seven are a part of the Vought. I wouldn’t be against if someone said everyone in the show is technically a Villain in some ways. Maybe the one or two I’d say aren’t are Starlight and Hughie. They are possibly the two main characters of the show, Starlight seems to have a flat-arc she wants to be a hero, but the many obstacles in her path challenge whether she can actually do that. Hughie’s arc is a bit different he has to realize that the world is a little bit grey and he has to come to terms with that, not everything in the world is black or white, there is a ton of grey area in this dark, cruel and mysterious world. There are obstacles that he has to overcome to realize that, but also not everyone is an awful being as well, there are some good people in this fucked up world. Billy Butcher is also a great character he challenges Hughie on the reality of the world. He thinks all supes are basically evil and we can’t trust any of them. You kind of get upset on his ideals; however, you start to realize as the first season goes on, as to why he feels the way he does. Billy’s main goal is that he wants to just end the supes specifically The Homelander. The Homelander is arguably the most interesting character in the show, he is basically Superman is he was human and evil. The Homelander is a bit corrupted sociopathical superhuman, he seems like a cool guy at first, and then he begins to reveal his true colors. He is someone you wish was on your side, because if he isn’t at any moment he could just fuck the whole world up, or even just take control over all of Earth of he really wanted to. (SPOILERS) Billy and Homelander have a bit of an interesting history together and it is very much like, “Well Shit.” You want Billy to win at the end of the day, but Homelander just seems to have the cards played in his favor. My negatives are The Deep he is kind of an asshole, but you do start to feel for the guy and accept him as a character, however later on he feels sidelined and for a few later episodes it feels he doesn’t have a huge purpose to the overall story. That is really my only real flaw. I rather not talk about every character, but I think almost every “major” character gets a decent amount of development to understand who they are and their goal and motivations. Overall, the first season was really good, I can’t wait for season two.
Acting – 10
The acting is great, everyone does really well portraying their characters. The standouts are Karl Urban as Billy Butcher and Antony Starr as The Homelander.
Post-Production – 10
Post-production is done well the editing is good, the effects are good, I even like the color is brings a more darker, grittier feel to the show.
Entertainment – 9
I will say the show is pretty good. My negatives are the first four episodes were incredibly captivating the final four, while still good, didn’t feel as captivating as the first four. It may have also been the long stoppage I took as well. Also, The Deep B-plot felt okay, good enough to watch, and did add some character development for him just didn’t feel as impactful to the overall story. Regardless, this was a good show. I’m looking forward to Season 2!
9.4/10 – Good First Season!
