Directing – 7

I thought the direction was okay. I think that the pacing was good. I thought there were some choices that were great, but there were also some choices I didn’t like. I do think the action was done well, I will say however, it would have been nice to have some of the action feel a little more realistic, I understand that Mortal Kombat is based off a video game, I still would have liked some more sense of realism to make the world feel a little more real. For example, some of the blood that comes out so much comes out that just seems off at times. I do think that having some of the characters actually say phrases like, “Fatality was a bit of a strange choice as well. And then a few others strange choices. Also, it feels very clean some of the time, I also think some casting choices weren’t the best. Not to mention some of the acting is not that great.

Cinematography – 8

The cinematography was fine, It was good enough for what it was.

Score – 8

The score was fine, there were some that I din’t alway agree with. For example, one scene it should’ve been more of a more impactful tone, instead it just went very arcade like.

Story – 6

The story was okay. The story follows Cole Young as he as been chosen to be a part of a tournament known as Mortal Kombat and he is trying to found by the other Earth realm warriors, before Shang Tsung’s warriors kill them off. I actually liked the protagonist Cole Young. I found him to be a cool character. I thought the story was nice, Shang Tsung isn’t playing by the rules and just deciding to try and kill the champions off before the tournament. I do think some casting choices weren’t the best. Liu Kang looked very much like a teenager with a wig, Shang Tsung didn’t look that menacing as he should have been. Also, Raiden didn’t look as God like as he could have been. (SPOILERS) I didn’t like the decision to have Kano betray the team halfway in the film. I also think a couple characters were in the film really just to die off, some of the dialogue was kind of cheesy. Also, I felt we could have gotten more characterization for Sub-Zero and why he was the way he was. I felt that having him a bit one dimension was not the best choice. The story was solid, not the best, but decent enough, I suppose.

Acting – 6

Some of the acting wasn’t always the greatest. I thought some characters played their parts well, but a few were whatever.

Post-Production – 7

I will say that the blood at times felt very over the top and unnecessary, and sometimes unrealistic. Also, a good portion of the film very campy and just took away from the feel of the film at times.

Entertainment – 8

The film was entertaining to say the least. I don’t think I was ever bored with the film. I thought the action was nice, the story was solid. I just wish some decisions were a little different.

Final Rating

7.4/10 – Fun, but flawed film!
