Directed By: Nicholas Meyer
Directing – 7
I think Nicholas Meyers does a solid job at directing this film. He definitely makes this feel like a Sci-Fi universe and gives a very unique feel to this film. However, I have some nitpicks with his direction, the color graining seems kind of iffy to me, also there are some moments that feel a bit off, for example, I sometimes notice the Exit signs on doors. Also, some scenes felt honestly laughable. For example, Khan’s first scene he starts overacting and it felt so cheesy to me.
Cinematography – 8
The cinematography was nice at times, but it can be bit off with the color graining in my opinion at times, like the colors felt very dull to me.
Score – 10
The score for this film was done pretty well. An improvement from the first film, where it has many bombastic moments that felt unneeded.
Story – 7
The story itself was solid. It follows The Enterprise crew who discover an old foe is alive and now they must figure out how to stop him. The film’s potential themes and messages may be: Sacrifice, Mistakes, Family, Friendship, Fear of Getting Old, the Madness of Obsession, etc. I do think the story was pretty unique and solid. I do also think there were moments that very very cheesy like the main villain Khan looks like a WWE wrestler and his crew looks very similar, so it is hard to believe these guys were scary, other than a few scenes. This story also humanized Kirk a little bit more than the first, he is struggling to fathom that he is not young anymore, he has more responsibilities, etc. Also, a lot of the moments feel a bit odd. For example, when a ship gets a hit a person jumps over the desk to make himself look like he got hit. There are moments like that throughout the film that just felt cheesy to me.
Acting – 8
The acting is fine. However, a few performances feel a bit laughable, mainly Khan, he is a bit really trying to go above and beyond, and like I said it comes off a bit cheesy sometimes. Also, I feel like Spock and Kirk’s relationship isn’t always the best, like they are supposed to be friends, but it doesn’t feel like they have much of a connection to me.
Post-Production – 7
The post-production for this film is solid for its time. However, there are some fairly noticeable things, such as a scene where they uses a camera affect to make it feel like this sandstorm, and in the next scene they are not really covered in a ton of sand, it feels just a bit odd at times. Also, at times the dubbing and sound mixing doesn’t always work.
Entertainment – 7
The film was fine, it didn’t feel like anything spectacular. The film was a solid sci-fi film. Nothing too special, in my personal opinion.
Final Rating
7.8/10 – Solid Sci-Fi Film.
