Directed By: James Gray

Directing – 9

James Gray’s Direction for this movie is brilliant. Only negative is it can suffer from pacing issues at times. It is a bit of a slow movie. That may or may not hurt the watchability factor over time. Other than that, his direction is great.

Cinematography – 10

Hoyte Van Hoytema is great and he just proves it again with this film. The scenery and the cinematography is just beautiful.

Score – 10

The score is beautiful and in a way kind of haunting. It really makes space seem both as this marvelous and scary place.

Story – 9

The story is great. It really goes into this man’s quest to find his father and figure out what’s really going on? Both with everyone trying to find him and his father himself. It also explores how isolation, solitude, maybe being in space for extensive periods of time, and even obsession can impact someone overtime. There are maybe some nitpicks with whether or not some things are accurate in terms of space and space travel. Also, some things do happen that may make some people may ask, “Does that make sense?” Overall, the story itself is great.

Acting – 10

The acting is great. Brad Pitt gives an excellent performance, and a very unique performance. Some of his roles he’s more of that comedic, intelligent, suave badass. In this movie he still is incredibly intelligent, but he’s more to himself, throughout in his head he is speaking, not like a superpower or anything like that, but more of telling us, the audience, what he thinking at those moments. In a way kind of talking to ones self, but in your head.

Post – Production – 10

The editing and the special effects look incredible. Space looks amazing, and it does show the beauty and the harsh reality of space. It’s beautiful, but it may also be a cold dark place out there as well.

Entertainment Value – 9

Some may or may not have a problem with the slow pacing of this film. And yes it can be slow, towards the end of the movie I was a little bit like, “Alright, let’s move it along.” If I were to rewatch this film, that could either help or hurt the film in the long run. In conclusion, this film is great, it’s a very great sci-fi film, and makes space both beautiful and scary at the same time.

Final Rating

9.4/10 – Must Watch or Great!
